The Rhode Island Division of Public Utilities and Carriers regulate taxicab operations in Rhode Island. Rates are state-wide rates established by the PUC after a public hearing. All trips must be metered fares at the approved rates. Only taxicabs authorized by the PUC may legally operate in Rhode Island and must display the company name and a taxi light with MCT number on the exterior, and a PUC rate card in the interior. Taxicabs are the only vehicles authorized to solicit passengers on the street and in taxi stands. Taxicabs must have "TAXI" registration plates. |
| The regulations ensure that the vehicle is properly registered, insured, and inspected to state safety specifications. The PUC "blue card" issued to each driver ensures that the driver has passed a criminal and motor vehicle license background check and meets the standards established by the PUC. |
