The Rhode Island Division of Public Utilities and Carriers regulate Public Motor Vehicle operations in Rhode Island. All trips must be prearranged at a predetermined rate flat rate. Public Motor Vehicles are not authorized by the PUC to solicit passengers on the street, in taxi stands, or operate on a "call and demand" basis. PMV's do not display any signage or decals on the vehicles except those affixed by the vehicle manufacturer. The vehicle must have "PUBLIC" registration plates. |
| The regulations ensure that the vehicle is properly registered, insured, and inspected to state safety specifications. The PUC "blue card" issued to each driver ensures that the driver has passed a criminal and motor vehicle license background check and meets the standards established by the PUC. |
